Col. 6. Soils. C, calcareous (chalk or lime). G, gritty or gravelly. L, loam. P, peaty. S, sandy. X, allergic to lime. These indicate preferences of particular plants where shown; note particularly those with an "X". Where no indication is given the plant is normally tolerant of any reasonably good, well- drained soil.

Col. 8. F, foliage fragrant or aromatic. S, flowers scented.

Col. 9. Growth. R, rapid or fairly rapid. S, slow growing.

These arc comparative degrees. Those indicated as rapid will need controlling and are more suitable for the larger gardens; the slow growing are best for the smaller gardens.

Col. 10. An * (asterisk) indicates that the plant is not fully hardy.
