Dwarf trees and shrubs
SMALL TREES AND FLOWERING SHRUBS

   Apart from the coniferous trees there are a number of small or dwarf varieties of other trees, shrubs, flowering shrubs and heaths that can be used in the minigarden, including both evergreen and deciduous. They are more suitable for the sink type of garden and, without some additional artificial dwarfing, will probably outgrow the garden in a year or so. Where a height is given it indicates a more permanent small form.

Japanese maple, acer. Very lovely; long arching branches, palmate leaves (Fig. 50), and glorious colourings. 12-18 in?. A. japonicum variegata; A. j. aureum; A. palmatum dissectum atropurpureum; A. p. d. viridis.

Rock rose, cistus alyssoides; G. fiorentinus augustifolius. 6 ins. Purple, red or whitish flowers May-July. Dry, sunny position.

Cotoneaster congesta; C. thymifolia. Both 10-12 ins., Fig. 51. Red berries June. Avoid shade and excess of moisture.

Corokia cotoneaster. 12 ins. Spiky, spreading, similar Fig. 45. Yellow scented flowers.

Broom, cytisus Ardoinii. 12 ins. C. austriacus Heuffeli. 6 ins. C. decumbens. 8 ins. Flowers May-June. Dry, sunny position. Sandy or gravelly soil.

Polygala chamaebuxus; P. c. purpurea. Both 3-5 ins. Cream flowers May-June. Slight shade preferred.

Rhododendron impeditum, 8-10 ins.; R. kamtschaticum, 3-6 ins.; R. imbricatum. Shelter from wind and sun. Moist peaty, loam; avoid lime or clay. Purplish flowers June-July.

Willow, salix herbacea, 4 ins.; S. repens. Plant moist soil, near water. Attractive silver catkins.

Jasmine, jasminum Parkeri. 12 ins. Scented yellow flowers fol- lowed by berries.

Wild rosemary, andromeda polifolia compacta. 6 ins. Pink flowers April-May.

Barberry, berberis corallina compacta. 8-10 ins. Orange berries April-May. Moist, ordinary soil.

Laurel, daphne petraea. 5 ins. Yellow flowers Feb.-Mar. Light soil, semi-shade.

Gorse. genista dalmatica. 6 ins. Yellow flowers May-Aug. Dry, sandy soil, sunny position.

Grevillea alpestris (alpina). Grey-green foliage. Pink flowers. Peaty soil, sheltered position.

Sand myrtle. Leiophyllum buxifolium. 12-15 ins. Pinkish- white flowers May-June. Sandy, peat soil. Sunny position or semi-shade.

Spiraea bullata. 8-12 ins. Deep pink flowers June-Sept. Moist, peaty soil. Sunny position.

Rice flower, pimelea prostrata. 3 ins.; P. imbricata, 6-12 ins. White scented flowers May.
